Dubblestandart revives the iconic „The Third Man“ feat Ale X with a Modern Dub Reggae Twist
Vienna’s renowned Dubblestandart Dub Band has breathed new life into the legendary theme song from Carol Reed’s classic film, The Third Man. Originally composed by Anton Karas in 1949, this iconic melody has long been synonymous with Vienna’s post-war intrigue, its shadowy underground, and its timeless beauty. Dubblestandart has reimagined this classic tune through the lens of dub reggae, creating a version that resonates with the current political climate of 2024. As Europe grapples with spy scandals and the geopolitical tensions between superpowers like the USA and Russia intensify, this adaptation captures the essence of a city where espionage and diplomacy intertwine.
“We wanted to bring a fresh perspective to this timeless piece,” says Paul Zasky, the band’s bass player. “The Third Man theme is not just a melody; it’s a symbol of Vienna’s complex history. Our dub version adds a layer of modernity while respecting its roots.” “Dub reggae has always been about transformation and reinterpretation,” adds Robbie Ost, head of Go East Studios, where the band produces on hi-tec mixing equipment, classic analog dub devices, and restored synthesizers from the late 70s.“By blending the classic with the contemporary, we hope to connect with a new generation of listeners who can appreciate the depth and relevance of our music.” adds drummer Ale X, who also plays the cither on this track. Nicolai Beverungen, head of Echo Beach, the Hamburg-based label, shares the enthusiasm: “Dubblestandart has always been at the forefront of innovation. Their reinterpretation of The Third Man theme is a testament to their creativity and the timelessness of this classic. We are proud to support this project and believe it will resonate deeply with both long-time fans and new listeners.”
Dubblestandart’s THE THIRD MAN THEME FEAT ALE X(On the cither) – is a track that echoes the past while speaking to the present.
CCT 3032:
Arta Arden, a Latvian singer/songwriter, producer, and composer based in Bristol, UK, has been deeply influenced by the city’s iconic trip-hop scene. Over her 15 years in Bristol, she has become a prominent figure in the bittersweet, downtempo vibe pioneered by Massive Attack and Portishead in the ’90s. Her music has been featured on BBC Introducing and Ujima Radio Bristol, which support non-mainstream artists.
After working on arrangements for the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry, Arta discovered Dubblestandart, a band that also collaborated with Perry. Their connection was instant, as Dubblestandart had been searching for a singer with a Bristol sound vibe. Inspired by the musical material they sent her, Arta wrote and recorded several songs, including their new single “Burnt Bridges,” set for release in October.
Dubblestandart, active since the early ’90s, is known for their distinct Dub style. Their critically acclaimed album “Return from Planet Dub,” featuring Grammy-winning Lee Perry, filmmaker David Lynch, and Ari Up from The Slits, marked a career peak. The band has collaborated with renowned artists like Marcia Griffiths, Carol Wheeler (Soul II Soul), Ken Boothe, Dillinger, Mad Professor, Dennis Bovell, Adrian Sherwood, and William Burroughs. They have performed at notable venues and events worldwide, including NYC’s Central Park Summer Stage, Moscow, Goa, and Coachella.
Together, Arta Arden and Dubblestandart’s “Burnt Bridges” resonates with today’s world, reminding us to cherish and preserve our precious bonds rather than taking them for granted. This collaboration blends Arta’s Bristol sound with Dubblestandart’s unique Dub style, creating a powerful and timely musical message
