Total Hip Replacement – In Dub
“Do it for the love of music” was a central message of the song “Roady” by Fat Freddy’s Drop from New Zealand. This attitude is also reflected in the Danish band Total Hip Replacement. The Aarhus-based musicians cultivate relaxed yet energetic beats, enriched with elegant grooves, fine percussion, a driving rhythm section and highly sophisticated brass. Musically, they are extremely versatile, combining reggae with soul, jazz, and African rhythms – depending on the needs of each song. On the last two of their four albums, “Anyankofo” and “Would It Be The Same,” they collaborated with musicians from Ghana, which resulted in significant highlife influences.
About three years ago, the idea emerged to give some songs to selected dub producers to explore how they would sound in new interpretations, pared back, playful and enriched with fine effects. Aldubb‘s dub of “Disconnected” from the album “Bliss” (2020) was the first version. Over time, under the direction of Karsten Frehe (Irie Ites Music), the present album “In Dub” was created, with a total of eight dubs that not only testify to the band’s enormous musicality, but also showcase the experimental approaches and class of the assembled dub producers.
Alongside Aldubb, Danish sound engineer MF DUB, known for his work with the Guiding Star Orchestra from Copenhagen, has contributed two dubs. The Dubvisionist from Hannover, an institution in the German reggae- and dub-scene, also contributed two dubs. Dr. Markuse and Oliver Frost, also highly welcome collaborators in the dub universe, are also featured. Last but not least, Canadian dub mastermind Dubmatix from Toronto is included with his vision of “The Door.”
